Winter Surfing

Jason, Michelle and I headed out to Neah Bay, with the intent of trying to paddle around Cape Flattery, which Michelle and I had never been around before. Winds are currently unseasonably strong easterlies in the Strait, which means if any incidents happen we could be pushed rather quickly out and away from land. The day we planned on attempting our trip the winds were regularly 25kts, with gusts higher. We decided it wasn't possible to feel safe enough to attempt this given conditions, so we paddled to Waadah Island, checked out the exposed east side, and surfed back to Neah Bay, after which we drove back to Hobuck Beach and spent the afternoon surfing. We also found big carcasses on the beach, a sea lion and a young humpback whale. Very large and pungent.

Paddling upwind to surf back.
Stinky Sea Lion.
Michelle watching her first whale!
Jason avoiding the closeout.
Watching Jason get endered 2x.
The wave as it broke.
